I took this while I was up in Svalbard on a Russian science vessel, the Vavilov. Once we went into the sea ice off the north of Svalbard we came across several of these magnificent Polar Bears Ursus Maritimus). They look very cuddly but when you see just how big they are and the size of their paws you quickly decide that maybe cuddling them would be a bad idea!
Interesting fact: The bears have such good insulation that they are almost invisible under infrared photography.
Sadly they are yet another species endangered by the changing climate with the North Sea ice pack melting more and more each year. Currently classed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
